Fancy Lady

It should come as no surprise to me that Aubrey relishes in dressing up in grown-up clothes and especially shoes. When I was a child I also relished in this and my mom has long since called me Fancy as a result (sidenote: my best friend Caton for a long time thought my mom called me Fancy after the Reba McIntire song which is not where my nickname comes from. The song is about a mom sending her daughter off to prostitution, something I'm fairly certain my own mother never had in the plans).

A couple weeks ago I was getting ready for a wedding and Aubrey decided she wanted to get dressed up too.

Check out those calves! It's true, heels really do wonders for your legs!

Yellow Polka Dot Shorts

Check out Aubrey's shorts. Aren't they awesome. I seriously want them in my size. They're so stylish. And who doesn't love polka dots???? When did hand-me-downs get to be so awesome!

Ring

I'm not usually much of a ring person. I mean, I love my engagement ring for sure, but I never really get to bent out of shape about rings in general. The other day though, I was fooling around with my ring and I was just really struck by how gorgeous it is and realized that I have never in the four and a half years its been in my possesion taken a photo of my ring. So I decided to take one. I think what I really like about it is that it is so absolutely gorgeous and I probably never would have picked it out myself. I guess sometimes Martin knows me better than I know myself.

And a brief story of Martin picking out the ring:

Martin: I think I like that one.
Saleswoman: Oh yes! That is a nice one! I really like that one too!
Martin retelling events to me: And I was just looking at her hands that were totally blinged out with diamonds and thinking, lady, you don't like that ring...it's way too simple for your bling taste, you just want to sell me this shit.

Gabe during the retelling of the event: I hated that place! As soon as they found out I wasn't there to buy a ring everyone completely ignored me!

Ruffle Skirt

I wore this outfit to church the other week solely for the reason that Ingrid just helped my figure out how to wear this ruffle skirt that I got on sale and was so excited about, but then that I couldn't figure out how to make it look good in an outfit. Well, Ingrid fixed that!

I mentioned the ruffle skirt to her on our vacation in Florida and we decided we would play around with some outfits when we got to New York. Then Ingrid had to wait in the airport on Wednesday from our arrival time of 5:30AM until her departure time of 2:30PM. Needless to say she had some time to kill and I received a voicemail from her around noon saying she had been doing some research on ways to wear ruffle skirts and thought she had a few great options.

When we met up again in New York we immediately scoured my closet and put together a pretty cute outfit, if I do say so myself. I needed to wear it before winter came to a complete close and I would be forced to think up a whole new way to wear this skirt, hence the wearing it to church a few weeks ago. Aubrey also wore a dress to church that week that I wanted to get in one last time before summer hits and she never fits into it again but by the time this photo was taken she had already changed back into sweats.

The Pose.

I love this yellow cardigan. I wear it all the time. I think it makes any outfit magically happy.

One of my best friends from college used to always stand in front of a mirror like this before we would go out at night. I won't say who it was but hopefully she, and everyone else who lived with us, can chuckle about this pose.

And then I decided, same pose but with a hand-me-down coat from said poser.

Wear It Wednesday.

Another new series! I'm seriously on a roll here. When Ingrid was home she really inspired me to become a more creative dresser. I wouldn't really call myself a bad dresser, but I'm a very unoriginal dresser - I find an outfit I like and then I wear it again and again and again. I mean for years.... My favorite sweater I've had since freshman year of high school. I wear jeans until they literally disintegrate. But it's not only the longevity of my clothes that's a problem - it's the actual outfits (the longevity just points towards my general thriftiness which I'm not going to dispute, deny or disavow) When we were in Florida together I realized a skirt and tank top combination I wore on the last day is the exact skirt and tank top that I wore to Martin's brother Gabe's high school graduation...in 2006. And I've worn that combination countless times in the last SIX YEARS. Clearly, my wardrobe can use a change of scenery. So....I'm trying to switch things up slightly, be a little more edgy with my apparel and create new outfits with my old clothes. So...to help me stick to this goal, I'm starting this Wear It Wednesday series and you can tell me if you love it, hate it, or could take it or leave it.

Last Friday night Martin, Gabe, Ingrid and I went for dinner and drinks at The Crooked Door. I wore a tank top, a yellow cardigan, skinny jeans and heels. This might not seem all that edgy but two years ago I would have never bought skinny jeans. Two months ago I wouldn't have worn them without knee boots over them. And I rolled them a little. Look at me, getting edgy all over the place.
